Susan Burrell Library
The Caroline Whitfield Secondary school is the first school in the whole region to have a library. It has been a great status symbol but is also much more than that.
The library has provided more study space for the students and has allowed the school to introduce independent study as an important part of their education.
There is a paid librarian on site to assist students and teachers with accessing resources and to support with teaching and learning as required.
The library acts as the central space for all the schools, providing an outreach service where schools can borrow books and change their selection every few weeks. Teacher training sessions are often held in the library.
Books have been collected, donated and purchased for the library through various means. Due to the high cost of shipping and the need for several of the same copy of books for students to work on, we aim to order most books to be delivered in Sierra Leone or to be bought there if possible. This helps with meeting our goals of reducing outgoings, reducing our carbon footprint and supporting the Sierra Leonean economy.
The library has been a tremendous asset in ensuring that there is great cooperation between all the schools as they collectively own and run the library.
